The information given to you by your home health professional when they decide you are eligible for a nursing home, will include the sites you are eligible for and an approximate time for you to wait for a bed at that site. You will be able to choose your preferred care homes based on this information.
When we offer you a bed, we give you 48 hours to move in. We understand completely that such short notice may be difficult for you and we will work with you to minimize the stress related to the move.
The rent you pay is determined by your taxable income and is calculated at the time of your assessment-your case manager will have discussed your rate when you signed the consent. Any costs not funded by the Ministry of Health are your responsibility. Rents are due on the first of the month and payable by pre-authorized debit.
When residents are in hospital, the monthly rent continues to be charged as the room is reserved for the resident.
Yes, George Derby Care Centre is a Complex Care Facility and provides care to residents with many different medical diagnosis. Alzheimer’s Disease is one of these. We have a special unit for residents who have needs that require more complex care.
Our facility has 300 beds, most of these are single rooms. We do have a few shared rooms. A shared room may be the first option available when you come to our facility. When a private room becomes available we will help you transfer if you have asked for a private room.
George Derby Center has resident care aides, licensed practical nurses and registered nurses on all shifts. Our recreation staff help to plan activities to be involved in. We also offer a variety of professional services such as Occupational and Physical Therapy, Dentistry, massage therapy, and music therapy. Our facility physicians come to George Derby to see residents and will make any needed referrals as discussed with families.
The nurse on duty will ensure that prescribed medication is taken and noted on the health record. Our pharmacy dispenses all medications, and the nurse on duty administers the medication according to the doctor’s orders. Outside medication cannot be brought in.
George Derby has many residents who need assistance with direction finding. We have a locked front door that is monitored. We use a wandering system that some residents wear, it alerts us to residents that may be walking out our front door unintentionally. We also have a unit that is extra secure where residents are safe to wander about the unit.
Small quantities of non-perishable foods may be kept in your room in air tight containers.
Alcoholic beverages are allowed (with doctor’s permission) under staff supervision. Alcohol is not permitted in individual rooms; however, it may be kept at the nursing station and obtained upon request.
Residents can always use the phone at the nursing station. Private telephone lines and basic cable vision hook ups are available in all rooms. Residents are responsible for arranging and paying for telephone service and cable service packages.
We provide a dresser, nightstand and comfortable beds equipped with safety features. However residents can bring small accessory pieces of furniture to make their own room comfortable and familiar. It is important for our care aides to have the space they need to provide care so George Derby staff may advise you on the suitability of furniture you wish to bring.
In the interest of safety, small appliances such as electric blankets, heating pads, irons and kettles are not permitted. Televisions, radios, and other electrical items must be approved for safety by the Maintenance Department prior to use.
We regret that residents are not allowed to bring their pets to live with them. However, we do encourage visitors to bring their pets when dropping by-please ensure your pet:
