The George Derby facility is a spacious and modern structure. The building’s features promote a sense of community for residents, family members, visitors and staff and the living areas have direct access to the grounds.
There are four resident living areas. Three of the units are home to 80 residents each. The fourth unit is the Behavioural Support and Transition Neighbourhood which accommodates 60 residents who are living with Dementia, including Alzheimer’s Disease.
Each resident living unit has a variety of communal areas for the enjoyment of our residents including:
The Artworks Studio provides an inviting environment for art projects, as well as equipment and supplies and a large work space. The studio schedule is posted on the door of the Artworks Studio as well as on the George Derby Centre webpage. Many resident-crafted items are on display for sale in both the Art Studio and the Gift Shop where family members and visitors are welcome to purchase items.
Our small bistro area is a great place for residents, family and friends to sit and have a coffee, listen to the juke box, watch the exotic fish in the tank, or play a game of cards.
Our onsite Chapel is a room for prayer and quiet reflection for residents, family and staff to use during their time at George Derby.
The Gift Shop, located on Main Street is run by our wonderful volunteers. All proceeds from the Gift Shop are used to support social events, supplies, and activities for the residents of George Derby Centre. Items such as clothing, resident made Artworks items, hot and cold beverages, snacks, and ice cream are available for purchase in the Gift Shop. The Gift Shop hours vary depending on volunteer involvement, and we are always looking for additional support. The general hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm, and Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 – 1:00 pm. Residents and families are also welcome to play a game of pool on our billiards table located outside of the Gift Shop.
In addition to our small library located on Main Street, the Burnaby Public Library visits the Centre regularly and you can make arrangements to use this service. Please speak to a Recreation Programmer assigned to your living area to make lending arrangements with the Public Library. Our small library offers a selection of books, reading nook, as well as computer available for resident use.
The Rose Room can be booked by residents and their families for special events. Please talk to our Receptionist about booking.
The Town Hall is a large space where residents, families, and staff gather to celebrate special events, enjoy entertainment at our Wednesday Pub and Saturday Socials, explore other countries during Armchair Travel, attend Movie Nights and Movie Matinees, play everyone’s favorite… Bingo, or enjoy chatting over lunch.
